Sonya Russell-Ofchus’ personal story hits home for so many.
The oldest of four, Sonya grew up in a single-mom household. The family lived in public housing for several years. Understandably, Sonya became a stand-in parent to her three brothers. Recognizing her life’s circumstance as a teen, Sonya decided she wanted more out of life.
She worked hard, studied hard, and graduated earning
a Bachelor of Science Degree, with honors, in Criminology. .
The experience of growing up poor was a very humbling one for Sonya. Her values influence everything she does, including her policymaking process, and the importance to lead by example. Professionally, she used her skills first on the Atlanta Police force, then as a federal agent, a career in law enforcement more than 25 years. It is through that experience that she established lifelong values such as fairness, ethics, integrity, and honesty.
As a public servant professional with leadership experience at the local and federal level, Sonya is a strong believer that the right leadership makes for a better community. She has built and sustained relationships that have brought people from diverse backgrounds together. She will take that same drive and energy and give Fulton County
the fresh start everyone in is longing for.
Like the hundreds of thousands of people who call Fulton County their home, Sonya believes that in order to have a prosperous future, we must choose leaders with a fresh perspective, with new and innovative ideas. We cannot keep re-electing career politicians who are out of touch, who have no new ideas and lack sheer energy to combat the present-day challenges we face. If we continue to accept the bare minimum, we will continue to get the bare minimum.
Sonya will advocate for everyone in Fulton County, whether you live in North Fulton, South Fulton, or Atlanta in between. But it will take all of us working together as “one Fulton” community to achieve the quality of life we desire. That coupled with Sonya’s bold leadership, we will improve public safety, economic and community development, the property tax and assessment process, the library system, and make our local elections run smooth and fairer.
What's more, Sonya is a grounded woman, thanks to her family and friends. Married to Kevin, also a former police officer, Sonya is a proud mom and grandmother, and is the owner of a small family-owned business and spends time in the community with her sisters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She is an avid basketball fan, who never misses a Hawks game, and was an AAU amateur coach.
Sonya will work hard to make Fulton County more effective, more efficient and more equal. As Fulton County Chairman, Sonya will give Fulton County a Fresh Start!
